Fig. 124. The pyramid of Taharqa at Nuri (Nu1). In the background are the later pyramids of, from the left, Ameninatakilebte (Nu10), Amtalqa (Nu9), Aseplta (Nu8), Siaspiqa (Nu4), and Amaniastabarqa (Nu2).

The Assyrians converted a large proportion of the country into a network of polities directly vassal to Assyria.²²⁹ At least some of the governors of these city-states were scions of the old Libyan–Egyptian provincial chiefs, royalty, and nobility,²³⁰ including Nekau (I) of Sais,²³¹ Padubast III²³² at Tanis, Shoshenq (F) of Busiris, Nimlot E at Hermopolis, Nespamedu A at Thinis, and Montjuemhat at Thebes. This Assyrian hegemony was, nevertheless, short-lived, as by 669 Taharqa had returned to Memphis, prompting Esarhaddon to once more march west, only to fall ill and die that November, while still in Palestine.²³³
